Artist Statement

WITHIN THE MIDST OF A PRACTICE

THAT SO LONGS TO BARE THE PERSONAL,

TO RID ONESELF OF —  [‘SHAME’];

ONE CLINGS TO THE CREATION

OF NARRATIVES TO CRITIC THE FLOGGED SELF.

                                          IN SEARCH FOR OPACITY— TEXT—

                                      APPEARED AS A MURKY REVELATION.

I AM an interdisciplinary artist with a narrative practice of performance and object. The narrative of self and selves as inscribed through inherently textual means. Text— the spectrum in which performance and object are engendered with narrative.

During my time at UCLA (2021), I explored a practice rooted in performance. Liveness as a critical tool for displacing universality and creating opacity in highly personal and vulnerable narratives.

As I transitioned from artist to educator after graduation, my practice evolved. Through my two years teaching Visual Arts and then English-- I imbued a performance practice with desire for object and text. Teaching moved performance from an action done by me towards a collaborative experience*. I have continued the use of clay, which began at UCLA, in performances, sculptures and paintings.

The journal has become an integral part of my practice in the last three years. Initiated from the lack of a studio, the act of writing quenched the weaving mind. In the last year, the cyanotype has presented itself as the aestheticization of my journal practice. Entrenched in a history of blueprints and proofing negatives, the cyanotypes fix into paper fluid journal entries on time, subjectivity, sentimentality and the directness of text.
